Though the aspirations of creating blood from one's skin and thus preventing the need of donor matching and risk of various dysplasia is rather noble, I am even more fascinated with the concepts / nature of cells that are observed here. This experiment reveals two observations of nature.
Number one, genes are not destiny... they are more like daily maintenance and adaptation. Not the One species jump to another species kind of adaptation over millions of years... but rather moment-to-moment adaptation over one's life time. This is illustrated in the fact that a mature skin cell was able to convert into a blood cell (white, red, and platelets).
Number two, I see here the concept of regeneration. I've observed this in nature via trees and various organisms and therefore have always wondered, "Why can't we regenerate what we need?" Probably, this is mostly because we have been trained and taught that we can't.
Perhaps we can.
As the saying attributed to Henry Ford goes, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, your right."
And even older, attributed to a King of 10th century b.c.e, "As a man thinks (human), so is he".
Well,
Now that this is being observed scientifically and published in NATURE, I feel i can safely discuss a seemingly rather natural idea of regeneration without being confined.
